The Waynesburg Rotary Club welcomed a new member to its group during its meeting on Monday, Oct. 3. Greene County Fair Queen Lindsey Gilbert visited the Rotary Club of Waynesburg during the group’s Aug. 15 meeting and gave her presentation on what the fair means to the community. She will give the same presentation of “Greene County Fair 133 Years and Growing” when she meets with the 60 other fair queens across Pennsylvania during the annual Fair Queen Contest in Hershey this January. Lindsey used her “growing” display to talk about all of the things that make the Greene County Fair special, from the 4-H livestock shows to the amusement rides to the fair food and, most importantly, the people. Cherie Sears, the Rotary District 7330 governor nominee, gave a Star Wars-themed presentation Monday, Aug. 8, to the Rotary Club of Waynesburg about the importance of new membership. Sears, dressed from head-to-toe as Princess Leia from the iconic sci-fi trilogy, walked the Waynesburg club’s members through an entertaining presentation with inspirational quotes from Yoda while discussing ways to bring new members into Rotary. Aaron Engebreth, a world-renowned baritone opera singer, spoke to the Rotary Club of Waynesburg at its Aug. 1 meeting about his family relocating to southern France. Engebreth and his wife Katherine Caldwell, the daughter of club member Peggy Rock, moved to the city of Lyon with their two daughters, Daphne and Cora, and son Leo, on a work visa last July. He spoke about the challenges the family has faced over the past year and how they’re adjusting to living in a new country. Engebreth has been chronicling their adventures on his blog that can be found at www.hereforthebread.blogspot.com. The family recently returned for a vacation to visit relatives in the United States. The Rotary Club of Waynesburg honored two scholarship recipients during the group’s July 25 meeting. Amanda Frampton, right, and Desiree Paige Rose, center, are shown with club President Kelly Stepp during the meeting. Both read their essays about what Rotary’s slogan, “Service Above Self,” means to them. Amanda recently graduated from West Greene High School and will attend West Virginia University to study music. Desiree just graduated from Waynesburg Central High School and plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study nutrition before eventually attending dental school.

Also during the meeting, Rich Mahoney, vice president and chief development officer for the Washington Health System Foundation, spoke to the group about the acquisition of WHS-Greene hospital into the system’s network last year. Mahoney discussed the various infrastructure improvements WHS has made to the hospital in Waynesburg and future fundraising plans to help the area.

The Waynesburg Rotary Club celebrated the “passing of the gavel” to a new president during the group’s end-of-the-year meeting Monday, June 27, at Thistlethwaite Vineyards in Jefferson. Kelly Stepp, left, is the club’s new president for 2016-17 and received the ceremonial gavel from Heidi Szuminsky, who served as president for the past two years. The club also welcomed several new officers and board members. Stepp pinned each new officer during the ceremony.

Sgt. Steve Dowlin, the station commander for the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Waynesburg, visited the Rotary Club and discussed several initiatives by the department, including the “move-over” operation to encourage drivers to change lanes while approaching stopped emergency vehicles on the interstate. Dowlin, who is a Greene County native, also cited various crime statistics and what state police are doing to protect the county.
